Currently I have a dodge stratus that I like well enough esp w/gas @2bucks/gal, but since I've never been to Baja, when I do go I want to get off the main trail and some kind of 4WD is in order. So what would some of you experienced travelers regard a well outfitted rig for long, dusty, hot rides-new or used-tire preferences, the works-new or used. I'll be leaving Bend, Or late Aug for a memorable 25th anniversary and I kinda dont want to return... Thanks to all Miles
Don't really understand the question you are asking. People who use 4-wheel drive generally do so to get out of trouble, not to go looking for it. Most dirt roads are passible w/two wheel drive if you know how to drive in off-pavement conditions (eg: lower tire pressure in sand or to avoid rock punctures, etc). Best advice is to always have another car drive w/you and carry a tow rope to help each other out.
I prefer a 4x4, not because it can get me out of jams, but because it can get me further back in. Personally, I own Toyotas. A TRD Tacoma with the electric rear locker is almost unstopable. I believe the 4Runner also has this option if you need more backseat space.
As far as tire, it depends on how you use the vehicle. For a general pavement/dirt tire I would go with a BFG, Goodyear, or Bridgestone AT. Most folks don't need a MT style tire. If you do, I highly recommend the Goodyear MT/R.
