Well, our fun Christmas/New Years family vacation was completely turned upside-down with the theft of our '02 Chevy 3/4-ton pickup from Pete's Camp
We filed the loss with Mexican insurance carrier but have not heard a word from them since we arrived home (01/03). We have submitted the claim to our US carrier and are hoping for the best. Of course, we know we will never seen this truck again. Anyone have a similar experience? |

Sure. It was 8:45 in the morning. My husband had just come back from the market and pulled up right next to our trailer. His mistake -- leaving the keys in the truck for two minutes while bringing in the groceries. Two Mexicans who apparently were just "strolling" through Pete's Camp jumped in the truck and raced off, nearly mowing down two elderly people as they sped around the corner.
Witnesses? Yep, quite a few saw these guys walking by the campsites. My brother, camped next to us, jumped into his truck along with my husband and pursued the thieves up Hiway 5 towards Mexicali at speeds over 100 MPH. Unfortunately, his Toyota T100 could not keep up with our Chevy Duramax and they eventually were out of sight. The military checkpoint up Hway 5 let them race right through and they were of no help to us at all. Our insurer: GNP. I have placed my third call to them today. |

Sandy,
Did you use a GNP agent from San Felipe for your GNP insurance? I have. Our agent has been in the US all week. Maybe I can shed some light on this. Debbie |

We obtained the GNP policy through AAA here in California. When we called the GNP claim number (the day the truck was stolen) they advised that we had to drive to Mexicali to file the claim, which we did.

Thanks for the encouraging word, Debbie. We are hoping for the best. I'll keep everyone posted.

| <Hi Sandy>
|
We were at your camp and and saw what went on.
Did you mention that a $7000 quad was also stolen. I will never, ever go back to the camps north of Baja. A den of theives and I suspect the police look the other way. |

Good Morning,
Several questions as I am VERY interested by what happened to you. We [and the bank] own a RV and are thinking of taking it to Baja Norte to look for a home to move to in a near future. 1/ Did AAA ever hepled you and did the mexican insurance pay you ? 2/How your American insurance reacted? 3/ Does your RV has to be paid in full before you take it to Mexico 4/ Was at the end the Police of any help? I am sorry to what happened to you and the struggle you had to go thru. Sincerely, Jenny |

police? what Police? There are regular police in town, not out of town. those out of town are federal police, including in San Felipe and most rural townships.
The federal police control everything and are in on the take in most of the mexican border states- maybe one of them saw your rig and wanted it. it's gone now and if it is still around the country, it's either well hidden or chopped. a better reason to drive junk in mexico and leave the lujo behind |

I suggest you go to the Federal de Caminos office in Mexicali and stake this place out and wait for the officer to drive up in it. Check out the parking lot also.
