I almost hesitate to mention this because I'd hate to see it get popular (I know, it's selfish). But we stayed in a development with privately owned homes in Cabo Pulmo where we rented a casita/casa from Cabo Pulmo Casas (http://www.cabopulmocasas.com/index.htm).
Marly was really helpful and oriented towards customer service. There is a notebook with lots of local info in each place. The compound is on the beach, although our place itself was a few houses "inland". At night we heard the sea. We had nobody within sight for much of our time laying on the beach. The reef is just a few yards offshore a bit to the south of the village (short walk). We flew to San Jose del Cabo AP (or whatever it's called, perhaps San Juan?); rented a car from Avis (who includes the mandatory Mexican 3rd party insurance in their quotes, unlike most companies); drove south to a local megamart called Soriana's for some food staples (get fruits/vegetables/beer there). Then back north an hour or so (?) to La Ribera, and back south another 1/2 - 3/4 hour along the coast on what soon became a dirt road. The rental places have kitchens/kitchenettes that are well stocked; you cross no roads, even dirt ones, to get to the beach (we stayed in two different ones); and it really is conveniently located (although everything in the village is really close). It was so slow when we were there (early January), we saw one windsurfer and one kitesurfer in the several days there. One afternoon we drove to a nearby fish camp at Corral Los Frailes and bought a fish to BBQ on the patio for dinner. Elvira in Cabo Pulmo makes great tortillas and sells tamales, enchiladas, fresh salsa and more out of her place. It was a bit windy for good snorkeling, but not terrible. Went for a really nice hour or so hike toward the mountain across the "street" from the village. We will go back for sure. I just hope it's still as uncrowded as it was for our visit!
