Driving 4x4 trucks down for our first whale watching experience, then off to visit friends in Mulege.

Any good ideas for camping near the whales?? We are heading for Guerro Negro and then trying to be as close to whales as we can. Ideal if we could bring our vehicles to the lagoon edge...dreaming of listening to the whales as I fall asleep....

any such place...?

possibly next to some pangarero's to take us out....

thanks for any suggestions

I don't believe you can camp on Scammon's Lagoon as most of the area around it is private and during whale season they don't allow anyone in the area without a guide for the whales. There are cheap hotels there that you can stay at, but may be full. Search Google for 'Guerrero Negro' and a couple sites come up with tel. numbers.

You could also try staying with one of the whale tour companies in San Ignacio Lagoon as they only have camping facilities (try searching for Baja Eco ours, Kuyima, El Rey Cantil, etc.).

Remember this is a busy season and you will more than likely need reservations.

I just returned from a two week trip. Left the coach in San Ignacio and drove the jeep to S. Ignacio Lagoon. Somewhat washboard and bumpy vados but not a problem for high clearance, air down the tires a bit.

I would recommend this site as a place to camp next to the lagoon and watch the whales, then catch a boat. We stayed at Kuyima, they had a tent for us. Nice place, great people, very clean, good food. Others were camping there on their own. Wonderful whale encounters.

Go soon, the whale season is winding down. Go soon, the desert has had a lot of rain and is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cacti and wild flowers everywhere. All cacti max green leaves. AWESOME SPECTACULAR VIEWS.

There is a place to camp right on the water just south of Guerrero Negro. A few miles south on Hwy. 1 you will come to a sign with a whale on it. Turn right and drive out the dirt road, pay at the gate, very reasonable, and the drive on out to the lagoon. There is campsites and a place to eat.
