No, no, no! Not San Felipe, too many gringos and all the problems that come with living close to the border.
Mulege is a small community sort of like Baja "used" to be like 40 years ago. But if you do move there try to immerse yourself in the culture there and- be nice. |

Rentals in Mulege are around $450 and you can find a lease for anywhere from about $150 (a palapa on the beach) to a home site for $150 to $350 per month but you will need to either build or buy a house on the lot or move a trailer in.

Yes you can live comfortably for that amount of money. We have a rental apartment here for 150 dollares a month, shower, bathroom, room with two beds , and place for stove. Just email me at bpcamalu@hotmail.com We are located in Camalu just 2 1/2 hours south of Ensenada. Close to San Quintin. Here you can get a HUGE house for 350 dollares a month, there are lots of rentals. Bye, Cholena

Yes, you can "live" on $1,200 in Mulege AND in Loreto or La Paz. But, what you have to consider as a retiring American in Baja is:
1)Where is the nearest hospital? 2)Is the airport close by or will I have to pay the exhorbitant taxi fees or take a bus to my home in Baja upon returning to baja after a visit to the states? 3)Is my chosen Baja home close to: adequate food shopping, blue collar repair services and the related materials and hardware, white collar professional services and the related government offices? 4)With regard to #3 above, I suggest not buying in the downtown area of La Paz or Loreto, but instead, buy 1 to 5 miles away from the downtown area where the real estate prices are 1/4th the price and you will only be 6-15 minutes away from the needed commodities in downtown, not to mention better restaurants. Just food for thought. I think that the best way to retire successfully in the Baja (which is what I will be doing very, very shortly) is to buy a house for about $130,000 USD in a real Mexican neighborhood with real Mexican neighbors not in downtown but in a close-by real Mexican neighborhood, or, buy a 3,000 sq ft lot or larger ($6,000 to $25,000 USD depending on location) and pour a concrete pad ($1,500 USD), plumb it for water and electricity, build a permanent carport or palapa shade over the slab ($2,000 USD to $5,000 USD), and buy a used trailer or 5th wheel with a really good air conditioner and park it on the pad. You can do that for $25,000 to $50,000 USD. That way, it is YOURS 100% without rent that will rise as the land value rises (and it will). What most people do not realize is that, to retire in the paradises of Mulege, Loreto or La Paz, it is NOT NECESSARY TO SPEND $350,000 USD or more like all the foo foo, shi shi American built condo resort projects would have you believe. 1 mile from downtown Loreto or 5 miles from downtown La Paz, you can buy a 4,000 sq ft lot for less than $40,000 USD (with underground sewer and water and above ground electricity and phone) and pay a contractor to build a simple, new 2 bedroom 900 sq ft house for $75,000 USD for a total of $115,000 USD plus closing costs and furnishings. I made a whole website on just that subject...with all the details. See my website at www.Baja-Lots.com. Good luck, mi Amigo.Loreto & La Paz |
