Question:
Can you tell us if you would think Loreto has advantages over other Baja areas. We are thinking of retiring in baja in the future(3 to 10 years). We live in Albany NY,own Itallian restaurant and sauce co. here. Wife is from Tijuana ,family still there, brother official in baja nord. He will be checking land for us when we decide area. Loreto bay development and town has enchanted my wife(she hasnt visted) but her brother is skeptical saying in is a 'closed society'.,whatever that means and prices way too high. Her brother wants me to open an Italian restaurant in that area too, since baja and sounthern Cal for that matter does not have good Italian restaurants by NY standards.Villavalenti.com is my web site.I am not a Mexican citizen but may start a Mexican corp.,my wife is obviously. Can you advice us? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Choices:
not sure

New York must enjoy very low standards for Italian food, as Southern California has some
of the best in the world. Quite good Italian
food found in the border area - Ensenada.(for
visiting Gringos)Remember, Mexicans like Mexican food!!!

No, Southern Cal does not have good Italian food...any translant easterner knows this. There is not good Italian food west of the Hudson river. The northeast has received by far the greatest proportion of Italians in the US. Your statement is from one who has not been east of the Hudson. I have been to Cal, many times. We cannot get good Mexican food here..in the north east either. California Ital food is repulsive to us easterners.

Ralph, Don't get trapped into an argument about the quality of Italian food in the east vs the west. Your question was about Loreto as a place to live.

First of all, I do not live in Loreto so I have no axe to grind here. I live in a small fishing village about 120 miles north of Loreto.

Loreto is obviously a great place to live according to the large population of extranjeros living there.

Its proximity to the airport is a big drawing card and it gets a fair share of tourist visits to help the economy.

Your brother-in-law is correct in saying that everything is somewhat overpriced. But that is becoming the standard throughout Baja and Baja California Sur.

Opening an Italian restaurant in Baja California Sur will surely attract a good clentele, just remember that the majority of your customers will be from the western states and you know what their tastes are in Italian food. Kinda like what the easterners have as a taste for Mexican food.

The main thing to remember is that Loreto is a beautiful area. There is a housing complex south of the city called Nopolo that is really great. Large homes on the scale of US homes and correspondingly expensive. There is also a development on the north end of the city that is predominantly extranjero. And you will find homes in the city that are nice.

Good luck in your search. Make a trip down and spend a few days to see what there is to see.

Go to Playa del Carmen. A lot of Italians visit there. They can tell you by wether you stay open or not if you have good Italian food.
And it's beautiful.

No good Italian Restaurants in So. Cal.-----I dont think so. Walk into one in Little Italy in San Diego and tell them that. You will be run out on a rail. We do need one here in Ensenada though, so please come here and open one---PLEEEEZE!!!!!
