I am going to drive from Phoenix to La Paz. Does anyone have any info on the road conditions?

Also, I am thinking of crossing the border at Mexicali and driving through San Felipe and Puertocitos rather than going all the way to Tijuana. Any info on that route. I did it once but years ago. At that time the road out of Puertocitos was pretty rough. I have heard it is immproved.
