Hello,
I just returned from a trip through Baja California and other parts of Mexico, which included a crossing on the ferry. I had a lot of trouble getting people on the phone, as well, but after percevering for a couple of weeks I was able to determine that for the moment "Baja Ferries" now conducts the La Paz-Mazatlan ferry service. I found working telephone numbers here http://www.bajaferries.com.mx/contacto.php This phone number worked for me: 011 52 612 123 13 13 When they're too busy, they apparently don't answer the phone. Apparently the schedule is departure from La Paz (to Mazatlan) at 5pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. I must say that I had a very bad experience with Baja Ferries. They are trying to rip me off over 500 dollars! This is because I needed to make prepay my tickets in order to insure a spot on the boat on a given day ( I didn't want to be left behind to wait another two days, as I had a wedding to attend!) and so they told me to wire the agreed amount to their bank account and that my tickets would be waiting for me when I arrived at the boat. So i wired the money. But when I did arrive at the dock at Pichilingue, there were no tickets waiting. What's more, they'd never heard of me. They forced me to buy the tickets all over again if I wanted to get on the boat. I had no choice so that's what I did. The manager at the dock, one Hector Dario Serrano Moreno told me he would investigate the matter and refund my money to my account once the situation was resolved. To date it has not been resolved and I now believe that someone at baja ferries has deliberately stolen from me. I think they believe that as an american who doesn't speak spanish well, that I'll eventually forget about it and let it go, and someone will make 500 easy dollars. How to avoid this? Now I know that you should NEVER wire money to an account, just like that, despite all their verbal guarantees. If you need to buy your tickets over the phone, use your credit card (with all its built in protections). It's funny: at the dock, I paid for the second time with my atm/credit card, but on the phone they didn't offer me the option of paying with it. It was wire transfer or nothing. What I'll do next time, and what you should do this time is buy your tickets in person with cash at the Baja Ferries office in La Paz, arriving later at the dock with tickets in hand. Prices are about 74.00 dollars per person and about 200.00 dollars for a vehicle. I would get a cabin, for an extra 22 dollars, as the ferry is roughly the equivalent of traveling on a third class mexican bus (which, with the right attitude, can be pretty fun). |

I'd like to amend my previous post by saying that Hector Dario Serrano Moreno did do his level best to help me out with my payment situation, and that the discrepency has now been taken care of. The funds were wired back into my account and everything is now in order. It turns out that the problem was with an erroneous account number given by one of the baja ferries phone representatives.
I would still, however, buy the tickets in person in La Paz on the day of the trip, as opposed to trying to get reservations. Do try nativetrails.com as this is a U.S.- based travel agency that seems to know the ropes at baja ferries. mml |
