While traveling back to the US we meet a guy at Rancho Ines who gave us a grueling account of being attacked by two mexicans at LA Bay. He was in his travel trailer when the two thugs woke him early in the morning like around 3:00 am. They managed to lure him out the door and one of them attacked him with a knife while the other went into the trailer. As he explained what happened he was obviously quite shaken just telling us about the incident which had happened a day or two earlier. He did manage to fend off the knife becaus had stumbled and feel on his back at which time he began kicking the guy who had the knife. He said he must have kicked the knife out of the mexicans hand and they both took off.
The gringo was from Idaho traveling alone but he said there where other campers where he was that nite. No one else heard what was happening and he could have been killed without anyone knowing. He will never return to Mexico again.
I don't know if he reported this to the local cops if there is any in LA Bay but I know he just wanted to get the hell out of mexico and try to forget it.
How many of these things happen and never get reported?

You answered this BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES discussion thread and not sure if you are inquiring about affordable places to see at Bahia de los Angeles, Rosarito or San Diego???

Please clarify -

I just can't understand why people get so freaked out about a single incident. There is crime everywhere in the world, especially in the U.S. but when people here of an attempted crime like the one mentioned in this thread, they never want to go to Baja again. First off, the guy should have never opened his door at 3:00 a.m. unless it was the local authorities. Secondly, this is basically "hear say" and there is no evidence that this crime actually ever happened. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there is plenty of crime that goes on in Baja but compared to the U.S., it is but a very small percent.

The object of the post was to convey the idea that there might possibly be more crime than what is actually reported. If you had been there to hear and see the person telling of that horrible experence you would not have had any doubt to the validity of his story. The person was literally shaking and having a very difficult time telling us what had happened.

I'm not saying don't go to mexico but that it may not be as safe as some would have you believe.

I have traveled all over mexico and central america and most of the malo experiences I have had were at the hands of the policia. Once I came close to falling pry to bandidos but my quick actions got me out of the situation before anything could happen. I have been in some close calls in the cantinas but I kind of expect that in those places.

Don't let your gaurd down no matter where you are, even when other people are camped near by. I once witnessed a crime happening on the beach and several other people in motor homes were there but would not come out and help the victim who was brutally attacked. I did come out and I am sure I prevented the attacker from doing more harm to the victim. I did report this to the local cops but no one else ever knew what happened that night on the beach.

Take it for what it's worth. Some people never want to hear anything negative but I think that can led you into a false sence of security.

Don't drive at night but if you must, travel in a group. Crime in Bahia is no more now than it was 30 years ago. For all we know the two atackers could have been Americanos.

Who knows for sure what the crime rate is when attacks like this one are never reported. I have been making trips to baja for close to 50yrs. I camped on the beach at Estero Beach in the late 50's while my father surf fished. I have seen baja change over the years in many ways. I don't know if it is any safer or more dangerous now than 30 yrs ago because I don't have the facts and I don't think there are any.
I have driven all over Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala so I do have some personal experience traveling south of the border. Your safety depends on many things but the most important is to always be aware of your surroundings. The same applies to where ever you are. Don't count on others to come to your rescue. I have seen other campers turn off their lights and close their curtains while another camper was attacked and beaten by another camper. Most people do not want to get involved and don't count on them to help you.
With the current state of illegal emigration there are probably more criminals in the US then there are in Mexico now. They are having a hay day in this country and the worst that can happen to them is they spend a few days in our jail and then they are set free to prey on us again and again.
