I'm going to be in Baja in Feburary and thinking of spending a light in Bahia de Los Angeles. Can you walk to hotels from the airport? I understand that there are two airports, the one to the North is closer to stuff? What is the beach like? Can you swim from this location?
We're going to be on the Pacific side petting grey whales and then flying over to Mulege for this night. I thought it would be fun to spend one night in Bahia de los angeles on the way to San Felipe where we exit customs.

the north airport is the one to use (paved 4800ft)two runways.(no fuel) fly over town before landing, taxi will come out to get you (about one mile south. Three nice motels in town and around 4 nice resteraunts. I own the nice 2 story house just south of the airport on the beach which is for sale. you can swim in the area, beach is nice soft sand many areas.

flying in is an E ticket ride. from the north coming in, cutting back over town, and a hook downward to the oiled wash rock. about 2 miles out of town. you just sit there and sooner or later Las Hamacas or some other hotel will come to pick you up and take you to town. If its hot out, you will be hot and sweating waiting around. if you stay at the motel that picks you up, it doesn't cost anything for the ride. If you don't, expect to pay $10-$15 per person for the ride.

The beaches are natural, none of the groomed look of Carlsbad or Oceanside. dead fish, strange creatures, big gray cockroaches, lots of flies.

Either the pilot will stay with you or will have to get out and where they are going by 5pm- the time that all airplanes into or out of baja are grounded. in other words, no flights before 7 am and after 5 pm. you can tell the pilot what day they can pick you up and the time (noon is best due to unforeseeen circumstances), and that give the pilot ample time to hit a controlled airport north or south of BOLA before the time runs out. BOLA does not have a controlled airport- one is an oiled airstrip, one is plain gravel. The oiled airstrip has a hump in the middle, so you can't see where it ends right after you land on it (very thrilling to say the least). The mexican army, navy, or Federal police (or any combination) will be there to inquire of your business, check your id, and generally imply that you owe some kind of fee(s). As I was there various times as a semi-official rep of the DGCA, in conjuction with the US Coast Guard (mexican Air-traffic controllers), whomever was with me didn't have anything to worry about forking up any additional fees or being hauled away in the back of an army truck (paid for, by the way, with your US tax dollars).

If you fly into San Felipe on a regular basis, I strongly recommend that you bring some useful gifts for the SF airport staff and officials, budget wise, it's not going to kill you, and it's better to have friends that recognize your face and kindly attitude. They don't make a lot of ony anyway, and good stuff is hard to get in SF. In this case, toys, camping stuff, lights, thermos bottles, gadgets and tools can be a good gesture. What goodwill comes around, goes around.
