I'm planning a trip from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas (and back, of course). I'll drive a 2002 F250 4x4 diesel. I know that I'll need Mexican auto insurance and a tourist visa but I've heard that there is something else I need called a "temporary vehicle importation permit" which I get from a Mexican agency called Banjercito. Apparently I deposit a "guarantee fee" of $400 by cash or credit card and this money is refunded back to me when I return. Is this strictly enforced by the Mexican authorities? I mean how would they know how far south of the border I'm going to travel.
I would like to drive our 1973 White semi with trailer into Mexico to buy furniture and vacation in Jalisco and dont know what kind of permit to get or wher to get it. I keep getting the run around. We went last year in our Nissan pick-up and had no problems but the big truck seems to be a problem. Why?? I would buy a permit if I just knew where to go.

ToTony Cassens there is NO "temporary vehicle importation permit" required for BAJA, only for MEXICO proper.
To Betsy a semi? You must be looking for a LOT for furniture. This is an area you will need to talk to their Mexican consulate(sp) as you will be entering with a commercal vehicle and proforming, for the most part, transaction that you would need an Import/Export license and permits. Plus commercial insurance ect. ect.

There is something about large diesel truck that upsets the Policia Federale. I drove my 1978 International Loadstar to the Mulege area loaded with all my household goods, a little bit of construction fittings and a bunch of donated medical supplies for a clinic. The contents of the truck matched my menaje de casa list from the consulate. That was no problem. But there was a HUGE problem with the truck itself. I had to try to cross 3x. Don't bother with San Ysidro, you'll get turned back and that isn't an easy turn. Don't try the regular crossing at the Mesa, either. But near the Mesa, go across at "Media (Medio?) Road. But even then, expect a big hassle along the lines of "At this time this type of vehicle is not allowed in Mexico" The officer in the federal uniform told me there could be a $2200 US fine. But since I didn't believe him we agreed to disagree and I was given a "warning". Nobody else hassled me the rest of the way and with 110 gallons of diesel I didn't need any (but there was plenty in San Quintin and G. Negro. I bought 20 extra gallons in El Rosario. I was told by my amigos that if I wanted to sell the truck to a local, he'd have to buy phony papers in Ensenada because they also believed that a diesel is a big probleo. So be prepared for delays.
