KD, you picked a gorgeous detour through yet another aspect of La Baja. One of my favorite detours, wonderful and very diverse scenery, geologically and flora/fauna wise. I seem to remember a few older Pemex through there, but never had to use them... only a couple of hours from hwy5 to Ensenada. Only about half a tank for the whole kaboodle. At the junction of 5 & 3 there's a station, but I can't remember if it's still operational or not; been a few years. Military checkpoint there too. Unless you're taking some time up in the mountains to visit the lakes and such, you'll be fine filling up on the Little San Diego Hwy(5), or in Ensenada if you're headed east. I absolutely love the drive and will be headed across it on the return trip this season to show my Better Half who hasn't seen it yet (would've this last spring pero mucho problemas con llantas). If you're headed in from Hwy 5 there's a ton of stations just south of Mexicali for several miles, plenty to get you to Ensenada from the east. There's a blue-million more Pemex across Baja than there used to be, but just for Old Time's Sake, I ALWAYS have a 5 gal. bottle in the back of the truck just for General Principals (not to be confused with Manual Labor, the President). Happy trails.

Gasoline is available (if open) at Ojos Negros, Ejido de los Heroes de la Independencia and Valle de Trinidad... also signed at San Matias. The distance between Ensenada and San Felipe is 150 miles and 225 miles to Mexicali, well less than a tank full drive... don't worry! There is a gas station in La Puerta, 25 miles south of Mexicali. Lot's of stations in the cities.
