Appreciate the advice given on my earlier post @ driving from SD to Cabo. I'm considering three days rather than 2 so any suggestions as to where to stop would be welcome.
Also...as I've told folks about my plans, many have warned against traveling w/surfboards or any items o roof racks as a sign of being a tourist and a target. Any thoughts or advice. Thanks, Jack |

Do you really think you can hide from looking like a tourist and why bother? There's probably more protections in place for tourists because so many areas are dependent on tourism. How many tourists have made bonehead traffic moves that were ignored because they are a tourist? Unfortunately we never know because it was ignored. We only hear about the situations where someone couldn't talk their way out of a ticket. Does Mordida still exist down there? Yep! I got stopped last month for speeding in Cd. Constitution (while following a hay truck through town over topes) but it was the first time in 40 years. Oh well- 20 minutes spent haggling and $20 and I'm on my way. I also know I've made bonehead moves many other times over a 40 year period that were ignored even though some were witnessed and the cop just looked at me and shook his head or wagged a finger at me. I've driven VW Vans with surfboards, cabover campers & motorhomes pulling bikes and buggies and now a new GMC diesel towing a boat. Do you really think we can look like anything but tourists? All I can say is stop worrying about what might happen, the chances that something will happen are very miniscule. Once you make it through all the Tijuana and Ensenada traffic relax and enjoy the trip. |

Alan,
Thanks for the replies to both posts and advice. I'm not trying to hide the fact I'm a tourist...because , as you say, I AM! The comments I got from other folks was "travel with your boards inside the car" etc. and all in all, it sounded like urban myth and stories from stoner surfers that pulled dumbass shit which brought whatever trouble they got in to, on themselves. I'm 52, speak a bit of spanish and not planning on being stupid while driving. You asked in the other post what my time frame was...I'm hoping to leave as early as mid-sept and hopefully no later than mid-oct. Any suggestions on places to see would be greatly appreciated. Surfing, food, history, art...I'm a writer so it's all of interest to me. And thanks again for the posts! Jack |

That time period could give you a good chance of finding whale sharks at BoLA and a good swell (with warm water) in the Cerritos area south of Todos Santos (Mex 19)
