How easy are the Telnor and Telmex phone cards to use? Are there a lot of working phones in the smaller towns, BOLA, Catavina for example. ? Cn I use my U.S. handheld cell phone in Baja?

You can't use your cell phone even as far in as Ensenada unless you've arranged for international use (as i was told my my provider) i prefer to use Ladatel, Telmex cards.. They are very easy to use especially when dailing to the U.S. for use within Mexico it's handy to have a printed area codes for local cities you might be calling. i would avoid the pre paid phone cards.. with the scratch off pin number on the back..

I agree with Rich concerning Ladatel cards. They are easy to use. Avoid the phone that say CALL HOME WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD, as they are VERY expensive. You can usually find someone with a public phone of even a satelitte phone that you can pay to use.

If you arrange with your cell provider to have service down there, you will be on roaming and any calls you make to a Mexican number will be international. So, if you want to make local calls from your cell (again only in the cities), you may want to get Mexican service. For about $20 you can get Telcel prepaid service that can be used on your existing cell phone. I have both AT&T and Telcel on my phone and it's just a few buttons to toggle between the two.

I hope this helps,
