Hi everyone. Last week saw three very large pargo, all weighing in excess of 20 _kilos_, caught by some commercial fishermen at Frijol Reef. A 48 lb. roosterfish. and two "smaller" pargo of around 20 pounds were also caught down in the Bay by local angler Gary Bendix. Live bait is the ticket here if you can find it but cut bait and lures (just about anything you have in the box) will work also.

May 1st saw the first dorado of the season caught by "Billie-O" from Punta Arena down in the Bay. He and his wife caught one nice dorado and three more the following day. A neighbor, who followed them out on the second day also caught a dorado. Billie said that they were fishing in 74 degree water about ten miles off The Mine and saw a lot of manta rays and over 30 green sea turtles feeding on jellyfish. Up until Monday, Capt. Alejandro had been reporting lots of flying fish around but no dorado.

Keeping this report fresh in mind, I topped off the gas tanks in Barquito and hit the water on Friday, el Cinco de Mayo for my own fiesta. I headed out 22 miles due east from Mulege ending up 12.5 miles east of The Mine. The water was a not-too-encouraging 71.3 degrees but I headed south dragging a Mean Joe Green and a calamari imitation. About 20 miles later, with no hits, no birds, no change in water temperature and nothing that even looked "fishy", I headed toward land to see if any cabrilla wanted to commit suicide. Because I was so far south (Isla Ildefonso), I didn't stay around any one location too long and didn't get any hits either. It boiled down to a beautiful boat ride that was sadly lacking in results. Not too unusual this time of the year however. I'm sure I could have enticed a few cabrilla out had I not spent so much time looking for dorado but, with our MCT tournament coming up the first of June, I wanted to at least give it a try.

I followed Mateo out on Friday but he peeled off at The Mine and fished the near-shore waters in about 150 feet. He got some nice bottom fish and some cabrilla later on closer to the shore. Marty Robison has been spending a lot of time "pan fishing" at a reef in about 95 feet of water out in front of Mulegé. Marty uses a Krockodile here and regularly fills his ice chest with a mixture of bass, pargo, triggerfish and "things".

Two fishing tournaments are coming up soon in the Mulegé and San Marcos areas. Mike Kanzler's "Yellowtail Shootout" (May 20 & 21) and the Mulegé Classic Tournaments "Just for FUN" dorado tournament (June 1 & 2). Mike's has a $30 entry fee with the proceeds going to the kid's sports program on San Marcos. The MCT tournament costs $10 (dinner included in the price) with the proceeds going to put air conditioners and office equipment in one of the local schools.

That's about it. Join us for one or both of the tournaments. They're a lot of fun and the monies go to very worthy causes.
