Thought I would post this to let anybody who is thinking about fishing from Ensendad what a great trip it will be. I have fished up and down baja, several times out of Cabo and San Jose. Also, I have spent a good deal of time on mainland mexico and Hawaii. Never before have I had such a great trip at such a reasonable price.
First off, Jay, who is the booking agent did a great job. There was a mixup in scheduling and he made it right, better than right. I appreciate the service he extended to me and I will use Jay in the future for anything related to Ensenada, not just fishing. So, book through him and you will be happy!
5 of us went out on the JRed, which is one of Gordos private charter boats. We arrived in Ensenada an hour early (1am), and they were ready for us. They had a parking spot directly in front of Gordos charter office, so we saved $10 there. Rather than keep us waiting an hour till 2am, they got the crew and we were on the water within 15 minutes. Joquien and Jaun were the crew. Both were excellent. Joquien knew where to find the fish and Jaun was on the ball when we got into a big bite. These guys know what they are doing and love to catch fish. We were on the spot when the sun came up. Within 30 minutes we were into the biggest bite I have ever seen. Boils everywhere, I couldn't believe my eyes. In an hour we caught 10 big albacore 35lbs. to 50 lbs. Although we lost a few, there was nothing the crew could have done better. Then, another 45 minutes later they got us into another big bite! All told, we came home with 16 Albacore and 4 Yellowtail. Jaun cleaned the fish on the boat, and we must have had close to 300 lbs in the coolers.
In a nutshell, if you can book the JRed with Joquien and Jaun as the crew do it! I live in San Diego and have taken several private charters from Point Loma at a cost of 3 or 4 time more, and have never had such a great trip! I will only fish out of Ensenada in the future and will always try to book the JRed first. The JRed is built for fishing and the crew is one of the best I have ever fished with.
