I live in Arizona and I'm thinking of hauling a 21' Mako (boat) to Loreto this summer for a couple weeks. Looking at a map, I see a major road (Hwy 5) that runs south from Mexicali to Puertocitos and appears to end there. From this point, I see what looks like a secondary road that continues south through Punta Willard, Esquina de Cocos and then turns west to Chapela and Hwy 1.

Am I looking at something that can be navigated by a truck pulling a 6,000 Lb trailer?

Would I be saving any time by going this route or should I just bite the bullet and continue west to Tecate and cross there?

Hola,
I live in San Felipe and know the route you mention. For 50 miles between Puertocitos and Gonzaga bay, the road is very rough and rocky.
It is very hard on tires and fasteners...welds and such. I've done it in a 3/4 ton 4X4 pick up more than once and broken stuff every time. If your rig is a beater and you have plenty of spare tires you might like it. I would not recommend it. By the way, the views are great that way...it's just real tough on your rig. After Gonzaga out to Coco's corner and hiway one, the road is sandy and not a tough go. So, there are 50 tough miles, otherwise OK. Time wise it is about a break even with taking Hiway one out of Ensenada.

tomcooke, Thanks! Your vivid description has made this a simple choice, I'll head down through Tecate or TJ.

Tom's advice is good.

The road south of Puertecitos is not good for trailers... SUVs, Jeeps, trucks are fine but it is very rocky for 50 miles to Gonzaga Bay (3 hours)... I was over it last February.
