In December my husband & I will drive the Baja on our BMW R1100GS motorcycle (two up).
I have looked at the map and Puertecitos south the road looks rural. A rough road does not worry us but we need to know if going via moto is possible or should be consider another route. We want to go from Mexicali to Loreto. We have travelled quite a bit on the mainland of Mexico but this is our first trip down the Baja. All repies greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Moto Girl.

Hi Terry,
Thank you for the reply. I am specifically looking for information on the road south of Puertecitos. I have read alot saying it's only about 50 miles but it is on the rough side and can take up to 3 hours.
Cheers,
MG

My understanding is that you should not drive anything less than a full on four wheel drive vehicle or Motocross bike or All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) on that particular section. Better off sticking to the main Mex 1 and that's bad enough in a regular truck.

Good Luck

have driven it many times, was in its worse condition ever last spring...very bumpy and washboarded. still, definitely passable on a bike. 2 up? that part is up to you. if your bike is on/off or offroad bike then for sure.

we LOVE that route when going south from colorado. definitely spend a nite in a room at alfonsinas in gonzaga bay. or pop you tent up a mile south on the beach. walk across the sand to the island northeast from the hotel/restaurant and climb up the trail. GREAT views from the top. can't believe how many times i've stayed there and only just climbed the hill this last visit. will send you some pics of the view if you want. post your email here and i'll send you the pics.

parts of the route have little side roads that can be way way smoother than the main road.
have fun! embrace the adventure!
