Hey all, my wife and I are traveling to Baja in June or July and are looking for non-tourist'y areas. I'm not in for high-rises and what not. We'd like to find quite secluded tent-camping spots up the Sea of Cortez coast. Will we need a 4x4 to accomplish this or will a regular economy car do the trick?

How are the roads after last year's storm?

I'm a local fly-fishing guide here in Georgia and I'll be looking to fly-fish for roosterfish and jacks while I'm down there. Will June provide as good of fishing as July? I'm used to heat, being from GA, but I don't want to be miserable while camping.

Thanks for the info!

....Or would it be better during that time to fly to San Diego and rent from there? Thoughts?

Thats a tough call, because it really depends on where you want to go. Some roads are fine in a regular car, but even more are not. Since you are after roosterfish in particular, you will most probably end up down towards La Paz since you don't find many roosters much north of there with any regularity. The season there is from May to November, so June would be toward the start of when they start showing up. If you want to rent in San Diego You'll have to do a search on companies that allow cars into Mexico. I think a better option may be to fly into Cabo and rent there. That way you can concentrate more in rooster-fishable area. Have fun!

Jonathan:

Two good sources of info - if you don't already have a copy of "BAJA ON THE FLY" check out the info at the link on this board in the BEST SELLING BAJA BOOKS
Another possible source located at:
EXCELLENT ADVENTURES There is good fly fishing opportunities as far north as Punta Chivato, Mulege and Loreto during June and July.

Expect July weather to be warm (95 plus) and HUMID; June not so bad.

Hope the info helps-
