Last time I was on the road was Jan 2004. Took my heavy truck camper. It's my preferred way going South and I'm rigging my truck and boat trailer to go that way again in Jan 2007. The key is to go slow and air down the tires. Assuming that you aren't camping you will either want an early start from San Felipe and go 60 mi paved plus 60 miles washboard to Alfonisa Hotel at Bahia San Luis Gonzaga. They have very nice rooms and restaurant. You could spend the night at Puertocitos and start from there, but it's only about a hour and a half from San Felipe. From Alfonisa you have about 40 miles of mostly washboard dirt road before you hit MX 1. You pass Coco's corner about half way. While I have a Yamaha TW200, I don't know much about big bikes and if you can air down the tires. There's a tire place within 2 miles South of where you hit MX1 so you can get your tires filled back up there. I love that road. No traffic, beautiful views. Here's a report from Nov 22, 2006 that is on VagabundosdelMar forum:
"Traveled the road a few days ago and it is the best ever... ALL PAVED except for a 2 mile section at 3 miles north of Puertecitos. Puertecitos (starting 10 miles south of Puertecitos) to Gonzga is VERY ROUGH... rocks, washouts, washboard to Gonzaga Bay... took me 2 hours to cover the 50 miles... and that is in a Tacoma.... all others (except buggies) will take longer! Gonzaga to Hwy. 1 is not as bad... about an hour + with a visit to Coco adding 30 min." |

Correction. I was checking Google Earth for the tire place where you come back to MX1, and although the resolution is excellent (I can see cars on the road) I can't find the tire place. I know it's there because that's where I had my tires filled. However, the turnoff to Bahia de Angeles is about 15 miles south, so if you took it easy you could get there and have them inflated. I assume that service is available because there's a big wrecking yard at the turnoff.
