Hello, I am traveling to Mulege via the Tucson crossing into Guaymas and the ferry into Santa Rosalia beginning of January.
Would love a trip advisory if anyone has come in this way recently. I am familiar with the Tijuana drive south into Mulege, this will be my first time on the ferry. Road conditions, things to watch for, any info would be great. Thank you, Candice |

I live in Tucson and make this trip several times a year. The last time was about a month ago. It's easy, the roads are good, the ferry is small but fairly comfortable. It's expensive (up to about $400 US with vehicle + cabin for a family or couple) but I like the adventure of it. I think it is only about $70 without a car. They take VISA/MC but only when their card machine is functioning (last month I had to get pesos from a nearby ATM).
I usually take the Saturday evening ferry which departs Guaymas @ 8 o'clock. I leave Tucson by about 9:00 am and get to the terminal in Guaymas by 6:00 pm in order to keep my reservation. A few times they have waited to leave until the next morning due to windy weather & big waves. Arrival in Santa Rosalia at ~sunrise. The number to call from the US for ferry reservations is 011-526-222220204. Diego, who is often at the ferry office speaks English and is very helpful, both on the phone and in person. Rigo is very helpful onboard--he runs the snack bar among other things. Hector is usually steering the boat and will be glad to show you how it operates-the radar screen, boat coordinates, speed, etc. My kids always find that part of the trip interesting. For night crossings I usually reserve a sleeping cabin which costs a little more but I'm also fine without it, especially on a day crossing which is often the case on the return trip. If you get a cabin bring sheets or a sleeping bag as the sheets provided are not changed between every trip. It takes about 10 hours to cross because the boat only travels at about 10 knots. If it's windy and you are prone to seasickness i recommend taking ginger + either bonine or dramamine prior to embarking but they don't cross when it's extremely rough. A good restaurant open Sunday morning in Santa Rosalia for breakfast is Tercos Pollito (walking distance from the terminal) but there are others too. If taking a car across don't forget to stop and get a vehicle permit at km 21 south of the border because Baja is not in the "Only Sonora" free zone when coming from Arizona and they often check for the paperwork before or after the crossing. Hope this helps. Have fun! |
