It happened again, a motorcycle was stolen from Playa La Perla during the night. It is a 2002 Suzuki DR-650, blue tank and fenders with white panels under the seat, and has a distinctive dent in the gas tank on the left-front side. My friend is offering a $500 REWARD for the return of his bike. You can contact me at this site or Steve or Dave at Playa La Perla.

I don't know what the answer is to this problem. This is the THIRD rip-off of this area (there were two robberies on Playa Requeson in November) as well as others on the Bahia... my boat motor was stolen here last March. The economy of Baja STINKS right now, people are hurting, and desperate times breed desparate measures, but damnit, YOU CAN'T POOP IN YOUR OWN NEST !! I DO believe LA GENTE OF MULEGE need to step up and turn in the theives, because I truly believe SOMEONE KNOWS WHO IS DOING THESE CRIMES, and it's just going to bite everyone in the butt. The Policia aren't able to handle this, they can't even afford gas for their vehicles to come out and investigate.

My faith is being sorely tested here; I've been coming since '95 to Mulege exclusively. The town and people are wonderful, but SOMEONE MUST STEP UP AND STOP THIS. It's not the cartels, it's not anything to do with the mainland problems. The lack of tourism in general is a result of the press, and my posting will not help that matter either, but I am compelled to speak out and warn the people who are camping and living here. SOMEONE KNOWS!

Hola Bajabuddy,

I'm a retired VPD (Canada)detective with over 29 years of service and I'm sorry to hear about the theft problems you've had in the bahia area. We've been coming down here for the past 4 years and like you, believe that 99% of the locals in the Mulege area the salt of the earth people who go out of their way to help.
Thefts like the ones your report are "crimes of opportunity" and a Mexican shitehead will do the same as a Gringo shitehead. If its portable and valuable, you have to lock it up with a good anti theft lock, or it'll be gone, whether you live in Mulege, Portland or Vancouver.
As far as the citizens of Mulege "knowing" the culprits, my guess here will be that the MAJORITY of the common folk will have little or no idea of the suspect(s). The criminal community will know who he/she/they are, but the likelihood of their co operation is slim and slim left the town about 10 years ago. The police down here don't have the resources to come out..that's just like in Gringo land, the police are too busy dealing with violent crimes and thefts like you have described are handled over the phone, in most areas.
My experience of the crime problems in the Mulege area are that whenever something is stolen, its "them damm Mexicans". I've seen and heard of more thievery from transient, semi homeless gringos who support their freedom lifestyle by stealing from easy juicy targets who leave valuables unattended. These gringo shiteheads don't cause too much of an alarm to other campers because, after all, they're gringos.
We had some nice transient gringos from California come to Coyote and they soon started passing counterfeit $20s in the area, stealing fish from vendors and finally, stole some firewood, one night (mine). One of my neighbors saw them steal the wood and told me.
The next day, the "beach council" had a meeting and it was decided that the shiteheads should leave, for health reasons. We went to their site and helped them pack and sent them merrily on their way, in record time. This group of wandering thieves (3 women and 1 man) were ABSOLUTE cons and used their distract and steal routine like seasoned gypsies.

If you make yourself a soft target, you'll be hit hard by ANY thief, local or gringo.

There is actually quite alot you can do to minimize these kinds of losses, here are a couple:
1. Lock your portable valuables with a good locking device.
2. Know or get to know your neighbours. Neighborhood watch idea.
3. Keep portable valuables (cameras, computers..) out of sight, if possible.
4. Use and audible anti theft alarm. (no one listens to these in Gringo lands...but down here on a beach, they are great.)
5. Get a dog and take a bite out of crime.

From the Roman philosopher,Seneca...“He who does not prevent a crime when he can, encourages it.”

So then, based upon your losing some firewood, you came to the conclusion all the boats, outboard engines, ATV's, motorcycles, generators, etc. being stolen in Mulege are being lifted by Gringos? And you are a Canadian detective?

God save the Queen.

well, well, well, not knowing that Mexicans got steeling in their genes, well, well. So why complaining about steeling?
It's common and somehow a sport down here. All recommandations of the CDN Offiocer > BS. Other than: Have a black dog roaming freely around what's not secured! But it got to be 'not a friendly dog'.
IMHO if something is stolen from you, it's your fault b/c you didn't secure it the way you have to in Mexico. (But assuming that Gringos are the ones is B.S. as well)
Assuming that "somebody" needs to stay up and do something about it??? Who?? the heck??? They are all Mexicans and steeling is a sport. Don't you ever forget that!
Mexico is a great country if you live by the Mexican rules. No US or CDN rules apply down here!

Bajabuddah, email me at vmxracer1@yahoo.com. As a victim of this myself, I may have a few ideas. Thanx. BTW, I'm at Cuesta Real RV Park if you want to stop and have a beer and talk. Just ask for David.

Thank you all for your replies. You are all mostly correct (except for tomtom; what the hell does IMHO mean? and b/c... save your 'texty' talking for your mobile phone, and it's 'steal', not 'steel'... remember your rant about "be nice or be gone"? Take your own advice, you're the most caustic person on this site).

A good barking dog is a great idea; there was a very large golden Lab inside the truck right next to the cycle that was stolen, didn't hear the sneaker-clad thief that wheeled it to the parked truck 100 yards away where more than one person loaded it, as it was a 650-cc which two strong men would have to grunt to load up. Truth is, this stuff that goes on (including my outboard last spring) is a local group that watches and waits... we were (and are being) cased, timed, and hit. No 'coyote' crime of oportunity here, i know the difference. Was born in the night, but it wasn't last night. These people (plural) are local, it's their profession. They have accomplices, and out-of-town fences to sell it to. BUT SOMEBODY KNOWS WHO, AND YOU ALL AND I KNOW IT. Trouble is, Mulege is a small town and it's somebody's brother or cousin or married relative, but what LA GENTE needs to know it's gonna bite 'em all eventually if it continues to ESCALATE.

The northern communities gave great aid after the hurricanes, now a little reciprocation would be greatly appreciated if possible.

Been going on for a long time, and seems to be getting more prevalent. The South end of the bay has always been a problem, with an organized group waiting for opportunity. I agree with Buddha, I suspect someone (s) know who is doing it, but doubt they will step up. I guess we will have to be smarter in protecting our goods. It's a shame but a fact. Even here where we live, where crime NEVER was a problem, due to the economy we are seeing organized thieves hitting isolated farms, Usually on a Sunday, watching until the family goes to church and then hitting fast, big trucks taking lots.
