Hola,
I am finding conflictiong information on weapons in mexico. As a tourist, I understand that I cannot bring any weapons into mexico, but as an immigrant I can if I have a permit. How exactly do I become an immigrant, and how hard is it to get a permit once I become an immigrant? Also, what is the definition of weapon. I see that anything over .22 caliber is considered military grade weaponry, so my 9mm and 30-06 are out, but does that mean I can have a .22 rifle for coyotes and such as long as I have a permit? What about paintball guns for sport? And most importantly, what about knives or swords? I have a large collection that I don't really want to sell, so can I bring decorative swords that hang on the wall or is that illegal? Any help answering these questions would be appreciated.
Muchisimas Gracias,
Adam

For your immigration status, you will need to obtain an FM-2 or an FM-3

Weapon status....handguns under 9MM....so a 380, 32 38super would be ok

rifles are a different matter....

To obtain a weapon permit, you need to apply to the army commander in the area that you live, providing a reason for the weapon (probably need to grease a few palms with some $$$ also)

You can also "own" weapons that are held and maintained by "shooting clubs"

Gracias for the information re: handguns. You said rifles are a different matter, but how? Am I allowed to have a .22 rifle? Also, What about the swords? Some of them I actually bought in Mexico at the border. Also, what about the paintball guns?
Thanks,
Adam

Well, you can buy a pellet rifle at almost any big department store (177 caliber only).

I dont think swords or paintball guns are a problem, BUT...........

You are in Mexico and things/rules change on an almost daily basis......I would just say that it all depends on how you use it/them, and the attitude and disposition of the various types of Mexican military/police who you run into.

Hey Adam,

You'd better check the information you are getting from Teniente. I'm an ex-cop and have lived here in Baja for over 11 years. Having said that, I am not an expert.

First, an "Immigrant" is NOT someone with an FM-3 or -2. An 'Immigrant" is someone who has completed the FM-3,2 process and is an "immigrado" or is a naturalized citizen.

Pellet (air) rifles are legal... and not just .177 caliber. Firearms are illegal and that includes ALL handguns, not just ones under 9MM as you have been led to believe. Check it out from a reputable source. Your freedom or ability to remain in Mexico may depend on it.Best advice: Leave ALL guns at home. I don't like it but I did.

Thanks for all the information, I consider this question closed. It's what I kind of remember from my last stay... The smart thing is to not bring weapons at all.
