Leaving Utah in August, heading for Mulege. Never been to Baja, but have travled the world, so I know how to act. I'm looking for a place to pitch my tent for no charge. Not worried about services, just need a quiet place near or on the beach so I can concentrate on my writing, hopefully one thats not to far out of town. I will also be bringing my boat. Can someone tell me of there are any boat launches on the ocean or are the all on the river and do they charge?...as you can see, I'm a bit concerned about the costs of things, as I'm working on a shoe-string budget here. Any help will greatly be appreciated.
I can also do many odd jobs, from sweeping floors to doing dishes and waiting tables. I also have some mecahnical experience and I'm pretty good at fixing things. All I need is something to keep food in my mouth and gas in my boat...going for the simple life.
Thanks in advance for all the help. I can't wait to come down and become part of the lifestyle.
Are you sure you want to go to Mulege in August? August is the HOTTEST, Most HUMIDEST month in Mulege. Mosquitoes, etc.
The town usually comes to a near stand-still.
Your boat size will determine where you can launch.
Camping by yourself anywhere on Bahia Concepcion during this time of year is very, very risky. There are several campgrounds/Rv places in Mulege at a reasonable rate.
You might consider late Sept. or Oct. as better choices - or better yet, November when the weather/conditions are perfect.
Thanx for the speedy reply Bombero. I really appreciate it. As far as the heat, I kinda figured august would be a sizzler, but my circumstances won't allow me to wait. I'm between a rock and a hard place here in Utah and the sooner I get out of here, the better. And no, I'm NOT running from the law, a crazy ex-wife or an irate husband. HaHa....
As far as being alone, I will be bringing a fellow adventurer with me. Please explain why it's risky during this time of the month to be camping alone at Conception????....why is it more risky now than say, in march or september???
My boat is an older 19ft Seaswrill v-hull with an 85 horsepower Mercury. I'll be towing it with a 4wd Pathfinder. Is there any reputable marine outboard mechanics in Mulege???....any decent Nissan techs?....not that I'll need it, but it's always nice to know.
How hard is it to pick up day work, just some type of labor job like sweeping floors or washing dishes???....I'm multi talented, and can do alot of things, especially the un-skilled type, which I don't mind doing. Not if it keeps gas in my boat.
As far as wireless internet service, I'll be bringing my laptop with me too. How prevalent is the WiFi in Mulege????
And last but not least, I've heard several different answers on this one, but maybe you can settle things for me. Some say you don't need a tourist card to go to Baja, some say you do....which is it????....and can a person buy a fishing license in Mulege???
What about tackle and bait shops???.....live bait, frozen bait???
Lots of questions and I really do appreciate your help.
hello david, i think in aug/sept, the population of folks around is really reduced, leaving security for a lone camper on the beach alittle more of a problem. as far as work, things are tough right now in baja also and many folks are out of work. its illegal for non mexican citizens to work in mexico with a work permit and good luck getting one of those.minimum wage in baja is around 50 pesos/day. tourist visa is mandatory! pick it up in t.j border or whatever border you cross as you will be fined if you wait till you get to mulege. hope this helps.
Thanks Glenne for the info. I plan on crossing at Tecate, so I'll get a tourist card there. Do you know what they cost????.....and thanx for the heads up on the security situation too! Thanks again.
Hi Guys.....thanx again for the help. does anyone know if I can get a Mexican fishing license in Mulege or do I have to drive all the way to San Deigo and get one there????
i buy mine from vagabundos.com its easier. i tried once to buy one in santa rosalia and it was a circus. have to pick up application in one place, pay bank in another place and return back to pick up license. just my experience.
Thanks Glenne for the info. I can't order it online because I'm leaving this address too quick, so I'll have to take my chances in Santa Rosalia. Where would one go for something like that???...to the state offices or a fish and tackle store???....and I'm going to look into Vagabundo's for auto ins. like you suggested.
ok good luck! bring your tackle with you and stock up as i dont know of any real tackle shop in santa rosalia. there is a fish and game office on the main road into town on the water. its very important to have your car insurance before you cross over. you can buy it at many places that sell mexican insurance before you cross, but definetly get it!
I've stocked up on 100% deet. Seems like the only thing that will keep them off!!!!...how is the snorkling this time of year, up and down the coast???? I lived in South East Asia for about 12 years so I'm spolied with warm water and great visibility....50-100 ft. Are you down there now???
wow.....I can't even imagine what it would be like to swim with those monsters???.....what about others, like the Tgiers, the Bulls, Hammerheads and Great Whites???....any problems with those and the divers/snorklers???
