Just talked to Rafael Cuesta who lives on the hill above the Primaria school- they hosted the Barber familia for dinner tonight. Rick & Lucia are @ Terraza & Mom is staying w/the Cuestas. All are OK physically, tho the photos of fast moving water to within 3 feet of the bottom of the big bridge has to mean their trailer @ Jorge's is toast or else in the Cortez.

Thanks for information, Eng. Mike. Wondering if anyone know about Lucia's parents property is and Chayo Mesa's next door (across and down from Saul's) We rent from Chayo on her property. Any news on that?

Got this from Rick this a.m. (I had asked what special needs he had):
Hi Mike,
I need a large bag of Pretty Bird African Special parrot food... 20# if possible but anything would be appreciated. Oliver came within 3" of drowning. He had to hang upside down in his cage for 4-6 hours to survive. You're right. We lost everything at the house except this computer, a few fishing poles and VERY few clothes. So did Lucia's parents although their house is still standing and can be renovated. We're going to build near Loma Azul.
Regards,
Rick

Email sent out 12:07 Mulege time today, from Rick:
(slightly edited for length)
Hi Everyone,
As everyone knows, all Hell broke loose in Mulege... water was within 5-6' of hitting the bottom of the bridge. At the "Y", water was a couple of feet from entering Pancho Analla's "Yellow Store" & two feet deep at the tope near his store. Jorge's Park- totally destroyed with only 1-2' of roofs of tallest houses visible @ peak of flood. Orchard damage is unknown but very severe. Oasis damage varied. Houses near the river may be salvageable in some cases and those on higher ground probably sustained much less severe damage. Other reports will have better info. All I know for sure is that some houses had 6-10' of water inside and some residents were trapped on second floor. Maribelle's Park & Cuesta Real... about the same. ...water came w/in a foot of Jungle Jim's roof.

Jorge's Park: TOTALLY destroyed. On a sad note, the only death in Mulege came from our park. Peter Clarke drowned. He had left the park but went back to try to get his car out. The current swept his car away and turned it on its side. Peter got out but we found him jammed under some trees and brush a few yards away. He didn't have a chance and his death had to be quick. A few things are salvageable... if you can find or get to them.
On a personal note, we got out early in the afternoon of the day before the flood hit. I learned a LOT from Marty!!! We're currently @ Las Terrazas but will be moving in w/family in a day or 2. Our house & trailer are gone. The palapa roof of my place collapsed & half is now on top of my neighbor's house. The other half collapsed on top of my kitchen and dining room, blocking access until today (hopefully). We are trying to salvage some more clothes, cooking items and tools. I think we'll be OK in that dept. Our parrot Oliver & cat "CC" had been taken over to Lucia's parents house- on "high ground", along with my boat and VW Baja Bug. The bedroom of their house was under 8' of water and the kitchen, where Oliver & "CC" were, got 5' of water. The top 4" of Oliver's cage is an arch. He survived by holding on for ~4-6 hours, upside down, from the top of his cage. "CC" got on top of a cabinet and stayed dry but very scared. The VW went under water (again) but is salvageable. My boat floated with absolutely no damage. It's a bit dirty along the waterline and quite unhappy (I'm sure) about being stuck in bushes of house next door (Lucia's aunt Chao) but I can pull it out easily.

To answer a few personal questions (I had 62 e-mail waiting for me)...
Nona: I haven't really looked into your place to tell you how much is salvageable, if anything. I heard you and Judi were coming down so, if you are, you can see for yourself. If not, get back to me and I'll let you know. I have pictures of all the houses... some more than others... but I have some pictures... 119 so far!
Judi: Same as Nona. Mele wants to know if Kevin got the pictures he sent. If so, he will send more.
Don & Val: I have inside pictures of your house (had to break a couple of windows) & boat. House a total loss. The boat is across street on top of wall of George & Mo's place (they bought Hollywood Bob's). Boat is at a 45-degree angle resting on top of the wall and against house. It seems in one piece but I don't see how it can be removed w/out serious damage unless a crane is brought in. Pictures en route (per Mele's request) in separate e-mail.
Tracy & Gary: Your house took brunt of current. Everything swept away & only ~half your walls still standing. No furniture inside. Your boat is down in or behind park somewhere and your VW is up in a tree (not too high) across the street at John Betic's house. Hood gone (broken in half) and big dents in the roof. It's salvageable if a mechanic can get to it fairly soon.
Dennis & Gala: Water got ~3-4" into the house. Have not gone inside to see the damage. Quad is missing. Trailer OK and just about where you left it (AMAZING!!!) We'll work on finding quad... not that yours is going to be hard to overlook!!!
Pierce & Val: Your house and yard are just fine. The water didn't get that high... close but no cigar!!! Don't know about office. I thought I saw waterline a foot or so above the entrance but I was quite delusional by time I saw building. Pelicano is OK far as I can tell. Zulema has probably talked to you anyway. See you on the 24th or so.
John: Pretty bad. Didn't go inside. Your roof is unstable & missing a lot of tiles. The part over driveway is now in my driveway. Rent will be $10 a day!!! You can write that off if you charge Gary the same for storing his VW in one of your palm trees!!!
Mike Flemming: Thanks for helping set up relief efforts. It is VERY much appreciated!! About pilots... I'm sure Serenidad strip will be unusable a few more days. It was under some serious water.

That's all the time for today. If anyone has IMPORTANT questions I can answer or get the answers to, feel free to e-mail. FOR EVERYONE ELSE... Please do not reply to this e-mail. We are inundated with work and "junk mail", it takes precious time to sort to the important ones... not that we don't appreciate hearing from everyone... but now is just not the time for "chatty" stuff. Thanks for your consideration.
Regards,
Rick, Lucia, Maralba, Oliver, "CC", Burro and Barquito

Josephina, Hugo and Hilda - Thanks for the information on our house. We are coming down around Oct. 1. Wish we could get there earlier, but have some medical issues to take care of. We have a place to stay when we get there as the house didn't have any damage up at Loma Azul. My friends from Kodiak, Alaska won't be there until the end of November and have offered it to us. Thanks again - Gala Smythe

Tapedeck - Good to hear from you. No, Rebecca is in Kodiak and won't return to Mulege until mid November or later. No, that wasn't our quad, but when you get down there please keep your eyes open. Polaris 700 Military Version. Much appreciated. Rick said trailer was in about the same place we left it with quad strapped to it. Funny that trailer is there - and quad is gone!!!! Confused We'll keep in touch. Maybe I'll give Russ a call tomorrow. Gala

Jim- Saw Rick Sat. pm. He's in good spirits, working dawn till dusk to get family squared away. Oliver has enough to tide him over till you get there.
