Back from Mulege. To all of my friends and people concerned, things are getting better for the people of Mulege.
I left for Mulege last Thursday on my motorcycle. I departed La Paz BCS where I now live. The road from there I must say in good shape. At el Cien (60km) north part of the main power grid received some damage. About 6-8 electrical towers were toppled over. They were in the process of putting up polls in that area and re stringing the cables. That is part of the grid from LPZ to Loreto and north. First detour was north of CD Insurgents at KM 15. The bridge was gone a make shift road was cut around and is passable by vehicle. We hit rain that day just outside Loreto some of the bands were heavy. Two minor problems there just past the turn off at the airport. Water flowing across the road in two places and was still flowing on our return that Sat. passable but slowly. I got through on my bike but not easy. Otherwise to Mulege a couple of stops but no other problems. As for north of Mulege it is open and getting better with each day. I did not travel north of Mulege but that is my understanding. Now Mulege no need to describe what I saw it has been describe in detail by others. Power is up in most areas but as of Sat. no water yet. A note: The people that contacted me all messages delivered and persons checked on I will personally contact each person either by phone or E-mail. I did go out to some of the small townships or as they call them here Colonias. There are people missing not sure how many but one number was 4 and I am sure there will be others especially in some of the small ranches in the valley. My ranch which is under new ownership "Rancho La Ventana" Did well. It is high and has survived three floods so far. The water went around both sides but did not enter the house. As for the valley you can get there from here but difficult. The whole landscape has changes. Some of the small Colonia's were partly destroyed and the Mexican Army and state police are out in theses area digging them out. Many people in Mulege (Mexicans) also lost everything and are living outside next to their rubble. I must say the Mexican Govt. did respond quickly and is doing their best. The schools (all) each child poor or rich is required to bring in some dry food items and clothing and it will be sent to Mulege. Of all of the cities here Mulege was hit the worst. I did talk to some of the locals most still in shock including some Americans. They all just happy to be alive. Some of my friends have stated that this was the last straw. The Mexican Government will be moving some of these people out of harms way and if they have other property will assist them in building another home. As for the American community I can't say. I have been a resident of Mulege since 1978 and my heart is broken for all who suffered and lost everything. Bye for now, Dave Weller |
