We wil be pulling a big trailer this time, how is access from the Border? Last time I went that way, there was no toll road, and we had to cross what the truckers called "Little Alaska" a very steep grade, with a bad downhill...Do grades like that exist on the toll road? Thanks....
Little Alaska is La Rumorosa... the top of the grade. Yes, it is very steep... but now 2 lanes each direction. It is a good highway, but not nearly the highway that is on the north side of the border... I-8, and that one is FREE as well.
I would suggest you not cross into Mexico until you get to Calexico/ Mexicali (if you are going from San Diego to San Felipe.)
Chuck, i did that road from west-to-east back in prolly 2002 or 03, it was 4-lane, but Mexican lanes, not as wide as I-8 or much in the way of shoulders. The grades were twice as steep and the corners twice as tight, with truckers in a hurry without the Cal. speed limits. If you're hauling anything of size or weight the US interstate is mas seguro. Not to mention when younger and bulletproof i used to jump out of perfectly good airplanes; now i can say i've driven the toll freeway ONCE. See you in a couple of months.
