AMERICAN RED CROSS REPORT

"Hurricane John Rips Mulege - 9/5/2006

As we are told and from photos, the river in Mulege crested in the town square of Mulege to the North and within several feet of highway 1 to the South. All of the structures, trailers, etc. along the river were either washed away or were severely damaged. We have no information on the Serenidad, one report was that it was washed away and another that it sustained very little damage.

The report from the Red Cross:

That President Vicente Fox was in Mulege (and other areas) yesterday
That he pledged national support for the area

That the water in Mulege is down to normal level

That the roads to Mulege from the north have been fixed or detours have been made

That trucks will be arriving today with relief supplies

That most structures survived the flood however, most in the river sustained heavy damage

That there is major cleanup to be done

That the government is sending in persons to spray for dengue fever as well as vaccinate all the children

And that although Mulege was hit very hard, the major damage was between Loreto and LaPaz.

We have been attempting to contact persons in Mulege who can confirm this information."

I think the American Red Cross wants anyone who has contacts in Mulege, with reliable, current info, to contact them.

TS John in Loreto

Posted some storm pics here. Sorry but I can only read the captions by scrolling down on each pic.

http://www.dropshots.com/tehag

Spoke to Federal Highway Police today and learned from them that Hwy 1 north is open to passenger cars and pickups only between Mulege and Sta Rosalia; nothing wider. They expect that restriction to last at least another 24 hours.

Steve: The trucker crawled out the windshield and swam, waded, etc. with some broken ribs a long, long way to the Loreto side of the arroyo and will be OK.

In Seattle: Alaska Airlines are starting to book flights to Loreto for Thursday. A friend of mine has seats on the first flight to get down there.
Call Alaska Airlines directly. Their website does not show these flights yet.

Hi, My Dad, Peter Clarke died in Mulege, as far as we can tell, on Sunday.
Does anyone have any details of his situation at all? My Mum, Sister and I are all shocked and grieving at this unexpected news of his death. We are trying to understand what and how it happened. Please respond if you have more information.

Sarah... please either email me at typhoonturtle@gmail.com
I just received more info. And I am having a hard time trying to bring myself to informing your mom as the first info was mainly incorrect. The only thing correct was his passing.

There is no phone service - no electricity or phone lines. Talked to Dustin for a minute on Skype this morning. He was using a friend's satallite. The road from Santa Rosalia and Mulege is passable. From what I have heard, good to San Bruno and then need 4 wheel drive to Mulege.

I talked to a couple of people in Mulege last night via land lines. Phones in downtown (north side of river) are working except where the home or store was inundated (next to river). Saul's Tienda has phone service, for example, and homes on the hill above. Even with the several steps up to Saul's store from street level, he got 6-12" of water in the store. Homes across the the street and further toward the river had the same water level but their floors are lower, and those homes don't have phone service back yet.
The south side of the river had no phone service yet (as of this posting, I just tried again).

This message is from firejimmie who has a place on the Oasis Lot #508 next to Cliff's B&B. Wants to know extent of damage to his place, trailer, boat, etc. If anyone could send pictures or post what they find it will be appreciated. Will be going down in a few weeks, but would like to know the extent of damage in order to get the supplies and equipment he needs. If anyone sees Dustin or Lili please tell them they are in our prayers and we are thinking about them.

firejimmie- Per Rafa, water was up to the loft level in Cliff's house. IIRC, that would be over the ceiling in the B&B; Rafa concurred. Best of luck. Water should have been slower moving in your section to some extent (no open roads parallel to the direction of water travel for it to move swiftly) which would mean more mud deposition out of the slower water, but less scouring damage. Rafa said Jim's new trailer across from you moved, but is still under the new ramada.
