Family lives in Punta Chivato. Alot, Alot of rain and winds around 72mph. Suppose to hear from them today. Just as concerned as you about those in Mulege. Will keep in touch. Have a feeling roads are not to good. A little worried about no contact. As of 10am this morning all is well in the bay including Mulege across the way. but concerns still there. be in touch.

I received this last night, Sunday 9/3/06
Hurricane John came up the Baja Peninsula Saturday night to within 25
miles
west of the beaches and Mulege. By the time it arrived here the winds
were
only about 40 knots. However at the beach we had over 20 inches of
rain
overnight.

I have personally checked El Burro and Santispac and talked to people
at El
Coyote and Pt Arena. There is only minor damage to a few palapas and
boat
shades. Billy O had some damage to his boat shade. Mike Peterson had
some
rock damage to his fire pit and a local trimarine came shore at el
burro. To
the best of my knowledge at this time that was the extent of the
problems on
the beaches.

Mulege: MAJOR FLOOD DAMAGE. At 4am people in homes next to the river
only
had time to put on shoes. The water in the Mulege river rose very
quickly
and soon ENGULFED ALL THE TRAILER PARKS. The water was up to the top
of the
doors of the houses within a short period of time. To the best of my
knowledge there was no loss of life. When I went to town at 10am there
were
still rescue operations going on. Dustin and O.B. John seem to be
involved
in most of them.
I think it would be accurate to say that anyone who had property on or
near
the river has major damage. Looking out where Jorge's Trailer park
was, it
is hard to even find a landmark. The water is still high and flowing
fast.
The real damage will be evident when the water recedes. I talked with
Bart
(Jungle Jim's) and Lupi (my laundry lady) and they said the water in
their
house was up to the eves. Bart said he could not even see Jungle
Jim's. As
we talked I saw a camper floating down the river. Power will be out
for at
least a week. That means no gas, etc.

Hola,

If passable, I'm planning to return to my home in Loreto this week. If I can bring anything down, please let me know. Meanwhile, any info on road conditions, availability of gas, and how things are faring in Loreto would be appreciated.
Best,
Steve

Larry & Gwen,

This is Joe's daughter from Palm Springs, we have been on the computer trying to follow you guys today to check on how you are doing. It appears that things are not very good, especially when you said Jim's was underwater. Dad is trying to keep track as well and has decided that all is gone at his property but if you tell us otherwise it will be an absolute welcome surprise. We are very worried about all of you, not just his property, property can be replaced. We know that you are busy, but, it you can get back to us we would appreciate it, we know that you have to be overwhelmed.

Take care of yourselves.

Debi

Tried to call Dustin & Lili at their number. It rings, but no answer. Depending on flooding in town - telephone building may have been damaged.

Roads - if the past storms have been an indicator, Hwy 1 in Santa Rosalia may be impassable for now.

Dorado - right about the roads. The storm track went right over the mountains (west) of Santa Rosalia. Roads north and south of SR probable washed pretty good. Give the locals a day or so and they'll have the detours setup.

Here is the Track:

I live in San Bruno (15 mi. south of Sta. Rosalia) and just made contact with my husband this afternoon because I am on vacation in the states.

We are still without power and have no idea when it will be restored. Telephone service was restored a few hours ago for San Bruno.

The new launching facility for the local fisherman has filled up with sand.

Some of the people at the Trailer Park on the beach have had damage - trees blown down, damage to seawalls and water damage inside homes with palapa roofs.

Will keep you posted.

I was talking to Dustin (on Skype) at 8:21 pm on 9/2 when the power/internet/phone died. He still had his boat in the water and had said it was really raining hard. That was the last thing I have heard from Dustin. Hope everyone is safe- things can be replaced- people can't.

Loreto is cleaning up a huge mess, but I've heard of no fatalities. The highway is cut completely, but detours are functioning for most cars. Electricity was out for 18 hours, phone and net for 30+ hours, water is still off.

I understand that a tractor trailer driver may have died trying to cross a flooded area in Loreto.

I recieved a call this evening (9/4/06 at 7pm PST) from a friend that evacuated out of Mulege. Unfortunately there were at least 2 known deaths there. One confirmed identity is Peter Clark. Peter C. was laid to rest this morning. His family has been informed. I expect to hear more from my friend hopefully in the next few days.
