In researching satellite internet, it seems complicated and expensive. However, Hughes Starband with .75 dish on IA-7 seems like it may work. Anyone with experience or advice for a system that will operate in remote Loreto area?

Hi, have used the system you are referring to and actually have the system coming down to Mulege the 25th Oct. I used the Hughes set here in Arnold, Ca until we got cable. System works well, with updated email setup. Weather is a factor, loosing reception when it snowed here. Probably will not have that problem down in Loreto. You would have to contract with Hughes, but I have the hardward and two dish setup. I have about $1200 vested but would let it go for $500 OBO. Are you interested?

Yes, I am interested in your Hughes system. Would need more info, of course. To contract with Hughes would need serial number, etc. Also, is this the tripod or roof mount system? Could I learn from you how to set up? We are in Mendocino county here in California and leave for Baja each year around mid Dec. We could talk on the phone if you are still in the state. Thanks so much,.......michael

I would strongly suggest that you DO NOT attempt a set up by yourself. Since the system transmits a signal, if you are off on your alignment, it could affect the operation of the whole system and cause problems for all users. I believe these warnings are also on the WEB site. Use a trained technician to set up and align the dish.

Teniente is absolutely right. Use a trained technician. I am a certified DirecWay installer, trained by Hughes and have numerous systems installed in the Mulege area.

I suggest you NOT buy a used unit since you can buy a new unit for $400 thru a licensed distributor in San Diego. It will come with a guarantee whereas the used unit will not.

That close to the border, I would contact someone in San Diego and make them an offer they cannot refuse. Call me for a direct telephone number to someone who might help.

I have Hughes with a motorized dish on my RV. But I did a lot of research before buying this last year. First: Meaning no disrespect to certificated installers: You do not HAVE TO have it installed by a technician and it WILL NOT affect the entire network if you screw up. Take a look at: dustyfoot.com or other portable dish suppliers, or for sure go google the internet dish users groups such as datastorm users for great info. There are many, many people out there, even as far south as Belize using portable dishes for internet over Hughes.

Used vs. new: caveat emptor has ruled commerce for thousands of years. Your used seller can probably show you how to align it!

Having said that: It is not easy unless you are a bit handy and a one time install may best be done by a qualified installer. But people in RV's use portable dishes and align them every time they stop.

Good luck.

Hank & Judy,
Thanks for the info. I sent you another 'private' email and also one to Mike. Haven't received a response but perhaps he is internet-incommunicado until returning from Mulege. But we did check out his Amazon 'wedding' wishes and will do what we can.

Expect to be there about the 16 or 17th of this month. Should we drop the books off with you?

Regards,

John Downing
