Hello Amigos,
A friend from France and I wish to spend 2 weeks in Mulege in November. We don't want to stay in commercial hotels, would prefer staying in something simple and relatively inexpensive. Access to the beach and snorkeling would be nice. We will not have transportation but are experienced, uncomplicated travelers. She is fluent in 5 languages including Spanish and I can get by, so English speaking isn't essential. Any suggestion or contacts?? |

As a person who has lived in Mulege year round for 13 years I would suggest she get advice from a local who knows there area year round such as Ric . Most of the hotels are very safe. The beaches are not!!!! I will be more than happy to state what I know as fact off line.
I moved out sometime ago not for my above comments. Dave W |

Hi Richard,
I am a Realtor here in Mulege and have a couple of homes that might be available to rent. If you'll contact me at mexrick@gmail.com I can let you know what's available. Rick |

I am writing this as I have had some inquiries about my statements. Mulege has been my home since 1973 my first visit. I have leased or owned (fedo) starting in 1979 /2004.
I have seen the changes both good and bad. Maybe it's the times but I believe it is the drugs that have caused the major problems Mulege now faces. The locals will agree but privately for obvious reasons. My ranch while I was away was broken into three times in one year. A first in 10 years that I owned it. No help from the State Police and no help from the local DA. I developed a suspect on my own and had a heart to heart talk with him. My ranch was never molested again. My facts are first hand. No rumors or hearsay. The town is safe and as I stated the beaches are not.... I made that comment due to the fact that a single female alone may want to camp on the beaches of Mulege. The locals will privately tell you do not leave anything either at your camp site or even in your locked vehicle. You property will be gone forever even your boat and/or your vehicle. In some cases upon return to Mulege, even you residence are not safe. I will make this short. Most of the locals there both American and Mexicans know I do not mix my words. I have had a Private Investigation agency for many years which specializes in Mexico. I am licensed both in Mexico and California. Conducting investigations all over Mainland Mexico and the Baja. That would include Mulege which might surprise many. Theses investigations include car theft, fraud, missing persons and homicides, yes the word is plural and that is Mulege. I have many friends still in Mulege and of course when you see my smiling face I may be on vacation and may be not. I still consider Mulege my home but...... My advice is use caution when traveling in the Baja, use caution when alone camping on the beaches of Mulege. Both the Baja and the mainland is not what it was in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Enjoy Mulege, be safe and most important be smart. DaveW |

Wow. DavidW
I never heard any stories like that. I never felt safer than when I was on the beach in Mulege. I walked up and down and never saw anyone. I have serious plans to move there. Don't scare me off. |

If you read the last line "Enjoy,Be safe and most important be smart."
The town has grown up my friend. Our homes have bars all the way around just look around. What I said are not stories, over a drink at the jungle or a camp fire. Go back through the past posting you may be surprised Sorry I made you afraid I just want to make you aware that stuff happens. As for the border towns I suggest "renta tank" would be the best vehicle to get you down the road on your way to Mulege. Relax, I am sure you can take care of yourself. By they way make sure the property you lease of buy really belong to the seller too. Ok here I go again. Over and out. I would sign it with a smily face but I can not find one to attach. On the fire that does not surprise me 1 bit. Davew |

Hey everyone. Let's not go off the deep end on this. I've known Dave for over 10 years (I was in business with him for a while) and he knows what he's talking about but- sorry Dave- he is IMHO a bit pessimistic about this whole thing. Of course we all need to be safe and secure and use our heads. Mulege is a VERY safe town with a lot less crime that in other areas, especially up north around the border. Notwithstanding that, common sense dictates that staying alone on a remote beach or leaving one's car unlocked while you go for a distant stroll is just asking for trouble. I wouldn't do that in the States or ANYWHERE in the world. Why do it in Mexico?
Yes, most of the homes have bars on the windows but so do most of the homes throughout Mexico. It's only common sense to have them. If you leave candy on a park bench, someone will take it! One of the things I like about Mulege- and I've lived here permanently for over 10 years- is that it is a small, quiet little town, far from the hustle and bustle of the big city and the problems associated with such. If you want excitement, Mulege isn't the place for you. We in the middle of Baja and the noise, excitement, and even the big-city crime just hasn't caught up to us. We're trying to keep it that way. We welcome tourists and do our best to make them and keep them happy. Give us a try... but use your heads. That's what Dave was trying to say... and it only makes sense. |

I sure do like this Forum! This is my first Post on this Forum:
Now days anytime you travel in Baja you need to be Aware of your surroundings/and What is going on nearby-Just like in the States. Mulege has always been special to me since the first time I visited there in 1967. There was a guy named Fred Mazzei who had a Fixed Base Operation out of Fresno Calif. he started flying a lot of people into the Strips around Mulege. I have stayed at the La Casitas several times as well as the Serinadad many years ago and found them to be very well mantained and comfortable. Stayed at the old Hotel Muelge when Saul was running it {The strip gets a little short on a Hot Day!!} Only place I have gone Dancin in the Past where there was a Soldier with an AK 47 guarding the two Doors. Sure no Touble!! Spent most of my time in San Nicholas and Loreto, but recently spent a couple of Days and like it much better than Loreto. As the man says, it still has the small town Flavor. Had a Good Friend called "Baja Patty" and her Pistolera "Lupe". who spent their time in Mulege when not on the Ranch. Anyway Go to Mulege, have a good time, meet the People and enjoy Life. I lived in Mulege for over 20 years and sold out about 5 years ago. The town has changed and not for the better. A murder on the beach last year, arsons this year. Dead certain you will be robbed at the south end of the bay. 2 of our guests robbed at knife point at "garbage beach" the year we left. Our car broken into and all our stuff taken. Houseing scams, too many hustlers, it goes on. It was once almost a paradise, by comparison even today a pretty nice place, but we wont go back. BE CAREFUL!

Well, someone with more that 10 years in country, finally spoke out. A side note a family while at the end of the hotel runway while they were get ready to depart was confronted by at least two men with guns forced to get out of their aircraft. That is after they smash the side window. The plane left for parts unknowned.
Thank you Chuck, a 20 year vet. Enjoy Mulege BUT....be safe and smart DaveW AKA Sr. pessimistic |

I have stayed at Clementines and have rented casitas from Cliff many times over the years. You could not find a nicer, more honest person to deal with. His places are complete with everything and very clean. I hope you give it a try.
