Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me an update about camping at Punto Chivato. Are there any palapas available these days? I have camped south of Mulege in the past but I have never been to the point. I hear it has wonderful tidepools so I wanted to check it out. I am planning on visiting for the new year so any info about camping in the area would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My reply might be too late for Cara's trip south but here is the scoop (for others/the record) from our short camp over at Pt.Chivato 11/9/07-11/11/07.

-No Palapas
-Yes Water at spigots and showers
-No Trash PU by Ejido (most or all cans gone) Pack it out
-No Ejido guy collecting fees
-Last several years of wind driven surf has more or less cover the old hard pack area, and virtually the whole place is a 4x4 zone (except for back behind the last remaining dune along the entry road. So no more pulling right up to the shore (practically) in your 2 wheel drive rig.
-Still the most awesome beaches to be found
-Rumor has it, the whole area (beach and headland above camping beach stretching all the way back to the west end of the runway) has been sold to a hotel/resort developer and the camping area is slated to close at some point in the near future as the new owners begin to deny access.
I am sure some PT.Chivato Homeowners or regulars can speak to this situation more.
It will be a sad day for our family when this gem is out of our reach after 30 good years of visits on our way south or north since 1977.
