Looking to buy a marine radio for the parents. Use will be primarily for 15ft. outboard (fishing) around mulege/bay of concepcion. Any recommendations for this application are appreciated!
Thanks

...ICOM makes a great VHF. Either handheld or permanent mount would be fine...

Midland makes a great handheld. Small, compact, all channels plus weather. About $60.00 each. For short range (10 miles) these work great.
Find them at the Sportsmans Outlet

I really like both Standard Horizon and ICOM. Have owned both over the years.

There is one feature on my current SH that I have not seen on the newer ICOMs I have used on other boats. When in the scan/memory mode, the SH does not display the fast moving numbers. Instead, it displays the last channel that it received a transmission. If you pick up the mic and transmit, it immediately transmits on this last channel received. This is very handy if you are caught away from the radio (like fighting a fish or dicking with the anchor or getting a brew) and didn't see what channel the transmission was on. With the ICOMs, it's gone back to the visual scanning of the numbers which is pretty useless, really. The SH displays the word SCAN below the channel readout.

I am using both a Standard Horizon in my Baja house and also an ICOM in the boat. I like both and doubt you would go wrong with either. Good buys for me were at West Marine on Rosecrans, Shelter Island area of San Diego.

My best all-time radio is not made anymore, I believe. It was a powerful Polaris. It was stolen many years ago. Sure do miss that old radio.
