I have family in Mulege and wish to have information regarding damages. I realize this is currently occurring and will be patient regarding information. My family split from Mulege so my guess is their destination was San Diego and safety.
(Update September 04, 2009 12:50p.m.) Just received word that family decided to stay in Mulege and ride the hurricane out. One message for them I am glad they are okay.

I spoke with my family in Mulege this morning. The rain was just starting, along with lightning. In looking at the hurricane maps, it does not look good. I am sure our home in the Oassis will be under water. Let's all hope for the safety of the people in Mulege. They have surely had their share. Between the economy and the weather, I am sure they are ready to throw in the towel. My thoughts are with them.

Text of post from another Baja site:

"Just spoke via cell with friend from Mulege in town on north side of the river north of Saul's. Lost power about an hour ago. They went for a ride through town at 3 pm...nasty but nothing destroyed. Heavy wind and rain but not a catastrophy yet. Will check in by cell again in 2 hours. Cross your fingers:

"I am very worried about the conditions at Mulege. I have not been able to find any information on the news or in forums. Are the people living along the river ok? The Orchard, The Oasis, Hotel Serenidad? Please post if you have up-dated information. Thanks."

I doesn't appear there is much news coming out of the town of Mulege yet, I haven't heard anything about the river. I will post something as soon as I heard.

I reached the "Transito"office in Santa Rosalía. All I could find out is that the road is broken and they had no info on Mulege yet.

This is secondhand, but heard on the radio this morning it was said that the water on the Mulege river was 2 meters higher than John. That will mean devestating flooding for both the town and the houses along the river.

This one was BAD. Reports of a meter of water in Downtown Mulege. Past history says that would equate to 12-14 feet of water at my old Home in La Fortuna. Enrique said it was impossible to get to Sauls Grocery from Downtown, even on a 4 wheeler. Over a meter of MUD on the road. I was fortunate to sell when I did. Our hearts go out to everyone there. Severe damage in Santa Rosalia and the Comundus as well.

I just called the Mulegé "Delegación" office. Water passed over the bridge. So far, one casualty reported. Locals are sad.

I received this from a friend about an hour ago

"I just spoke to Jim Christopher who was able to get thru, this morning to Quito in Mulege. I am very sorry to report that it appears that Mulege and the surrounding area has suffered a disaster of major proportions. Last night flood waters actually breached the main bridge by about 2ft. Remember that in the last major storm, I think it was Juan, the water came up to about 2ft under the bridge which did alot of damage all over town particularly along the river. Quito tells us that there is about 1 mt (little less than 3ft) of water in the fire station and that the roof blew off. Both he and his sons vehicles where distroyed. If there was that much water in the fire station just think what that means for the rest of town. Maybe 3 ft of water in Scotty's el candil ? It will be a major miracle if there is no loss of life in Mulege.

I am worried about the Apples. Jim's last post was yesterday afternoon but nothing since.

Jimmy will try and get in touch with Quito tomorrow morning for another report. I will do my best to update you sometime tomorrow. I am at the Power's home in Montana at the moment but I'm headed back to the SF bay area this morning.

Feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested."

The "one" casualty in town was my uncle. He refused to get out of the house to safer area. We were very sadden to hear his passing away this way. Very sad.
